Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter is being nitpicked over minicamp footwork—and it's annoying

Travis Hunter goes viral for shaky route-running but Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence says Hunter’s energy and talent are “off the charts.”

In just 48 hours, Travis Hunter went from getting roasted online to getting hyped by one of the NFL’s best young quarterbacks. So, who do we listen to?

Stumble sparks social media chatter

Short clips surfaced from Jacksonville Jaguars rookie minicamp showing Hunter slipping during unguarded route drills. The footage quickly went viral, with a bunch of people who know nothing about route-running pointing to his footwork and questioning whether Hunter has the technical polish to succeed as a full-time NFL wide receiver.

The overreaction was loud and immediate.

Never mind the fact that it’s May. Never mind that these are early drills. And never mind that Hunter spent the last two seasons doing double duty at CU, locking down elite receivers and torching DBs as a wideout.

Still, the internet did what it does — jumping to conclusions before Hunter even has a chance to get warmed up.

Trevor Lawrence: “He’s got juice”

Then came yesterday. And a very different tone from someone who actually matters: Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence.

After just one OTA practice, Lawrence shut down the overanalysis with genuine praise.

“He’s got a lot of juice,” Lawrence told reporters. “He can run all day. A lot of energy. I love it. Good energy… high motor. He’s like a kid, he can just run around all day. He doesn’t get tired it seems like. You can’t have enough of that.”

It’s exactly the type of praise you want to hear from the face of the franchise — and a reminder that real evaluations don’t happen by people on social media.

The coaching staff isn’t concerned, either

Jaguars executive and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli also weighed in, telling reporters that Hunter has already exceeded expectations.

“We traded our first-rounder next year and our second-rounder this year to get him,” Boselli said. “We felt like he was the best guy to be a Jaguar… he’s exceeded my expectations.”

Boselli pointed to Hunter’s elite athleticism, leadership qualities, and relentless work ethic as reasons the Jaguars believe in him long term.

Travis is still betting on himself

Hunter knows the spotlight is on. During the NFLPA Rookie Premiere, he acknowledged the pressure but made it clear he’s keeping his head down and focusing on the work.

“We just going to work, man,” he said. “There’s a lot of doubters… but we’re going to do what we’ve always done.”

He also added: “I was the number two overall pick, so I gotta come in and be a leader.”

And that’s exactly what he’s doing. Despite the noise, Hunter continues showing up, and just like Shedeur, his every move is being watched.

This is just how annoying social media is. If we’re judging rookies off May minicamp footage, we’re doing it wrong.

Travis Hunter isn’t perfect. But he’s built to change their franchise. He’s been criticized before. And every time, he’s silenced the noise with a huge performance and a work ethic that doesn’t quit.

Don’t let a stumble make you forget the kind of player we’re talking about here.

He’s not just going to be fine — he’s going to be special.
