The day finally came. After 16 legendary seasons with the Green Bay Packers, former Colorado Buffaloes kicker Mason Crosby has officially announced his retirement. While we all knew this day would come eventually, it doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye to a player who has been a model of consistency, professionalism, and clutch performances for nearly two decades.
Crosby, who played for the Buffs from 2003-2006, left Boulder as one of the most decorated kickers in college football history. He had a booming leg, breaking records with long-range field goals before being drafted by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. From there, he never looked back.
During his time in Green Bay, Crosby cemented himself as one of the greatest kickers in franchise history. He became the Packers’ all-time leader in points scored (1,918), field goals made (395), 50-yard field goals (43), and extra points converted (733). He also played a crucial role in helping Green Bay secure a victory in Super Bowl XLV, where he was perfect on extra points throughout the playoffs and nailed three of four field goal attempts in the big game.
But stats don’t tell the whole story. Crosby was the definition of reliability. In an era where kickers often come and go, he was a staple in Green Bay for 16 straight seasons, putting up at least 100 points in 15 of them. That kind of longevity is unheard of in the NFL, and it speaks to both his talent and his mental toughness.
Buffs fans will always remember him as the fearless kicker who could drill a 60-yarder with ease in the thin Boulder air. Packers fans will remember him as the guy who came through in the clutch, year after year. Who could forget his iconic playoff performance in 2016, when he drilled back-to-back game-winning kicks against the Cowboys, including that jaw-dropping 51-yarder as time expired?
Crosby’s journey from Folsom Field to Lambeau was one for the ages, and he made every Buffs fan proud along the way. Even in his final NFL season, when he briefly suited up for the New York Giants, it was clear that his heart belonged in Green Bay.
As he steps away from the game, Crosby leaves behind a legacy that most kickers will not match. He wasn’t just great—he was a true professional, a leader in the locker room, and an inspiration to young kickers dreaming of making it to the NFL.
So, from all of us at Glory Colorado: Thank you, Mason. Thank you for the memories, the game-winners, the ice-cold nerves, and the example you set for generations of players to come. You will always be one of our favorite NFL Buffs.
