National writer sends bold message on Travis Hunter's Heisman-worthy season with Colorado football
Rivals National Recruiting Director Adam Gorney believes two-way Colorado football star Travis Hunter is the best receiver and corner in the sport. He also believes the Heisman should be handed to Hunter ASAP.
"So an argument could be made that not only is Hunter the best defensive back in college football, that he’s also the best wide receiver," Gorney wrote.
"A two-way star who has revitalized a moribund Colorado program into a contender and arguably the best player in college football – at two positions. Go ahead and hand him the Heisman now."
Hunter's main competition, Ashton Jeanty, has done well to make the Heisman race a true competition this season. Hunter's having a historic season at his two positions, but Jeanty is having the greatest rushing season of all time.
The caveat is his level of competition, but that's an ignorant point. Jeanty still went for 200 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns against the No. 1 team in the nation, Oregon. If their competition were labeled "Pac-12" schools, no one would be making the arguments they are now. Mountain West love is tough to come by in national college football circles.
As Gorney points out, Jeanty is a Heisman winner any other year. But this is Hunter's year.
"In any other year, even playing at Boise State, Jeanty is a special-enough talent to win the Heisman Trophy. But Hunter is something that college football may have literally never seen before," Gorney wrote.
The 2024 Heisman race may have been the most interesting ever considering how QB-heavy it's been for a long time.
Jeanty and Hunter will be linked in their NFL careers too. Their respective runs were football's answer to the great home run race of 1961 between New York Yankees stars Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle.
2024 will always be a year to remember -- particularly in Boulder, since the Heisman history books likely have Hunter's name in them.
