With Shedeur Sanders off to the NFL, all eyes are on the trio vying to lead the Buffs into the next chapter: five-star freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis, Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, and the Buffs own Ryan Staub. And, according to offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, this competition is wide open.
Salter might be the most experienced—torching defenses at Liberty for nearly 6,000 passing yards and added over 2,000 on the ground. JuJu Lewis? Skipping his senior year of high school, and already looks the part physically, has shown flashes every day that makes you say, “Yeah, that’s the guy.”
But don’t sleep on Staub.
He’s been grinding behind the scenes for two years and knows this offense inside and out. Shurmur didn’t mince words: “He’s grading out very well each day.” For a guy who’s barely seen game action, that says a lot. He’s making real noise in camp.
Shurmur praised all three QBs, but his tone felt different when talking about JuJu. You could sense the excitement.
Saturday’s spring game at Folsom Field is more than just a scrimmage. It’s a peek into the Buffs future. And whoever wins the job will have earned it.
