5 biggest NFL draft busts in Colorado football history

Colorado only has one draft prospect at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine and hasn't produced a first-round pick since 2011. These former Buffaloes first-rounders didn't help the program's reputation with their disappointing NFL careers.

Bo Matthews, RB. 1. 13. . 1974. No. 2 overall. Bo Matthews. Bo Matthews, RB. player.

Bo Matthews is the highest-drafted player ever to come out of Colorado. The selection of Matthews seemed like a mistake right away. In his final year at Colorado, he only ran for 488 yards in 11 games.

Matthews was never a high-volume rusher for the Buffs but was hyper-efficient on the ground. That efficiency didn’t translate from the Big 8 to the big leagues as Matthews averaged 3.5 and 3.6 yards per carry in each of his first two seasons.

For his eight-year NFL career, Matthews never broke 500 yards from scrimmage and finished with 1,566 total rushing yards. He stayed in San Diego for six years before rushing for just 180 yards with the New York Giants in 1980 and then splitting his final year in the league between New York and Miami in 1981.
