Deion Sanders shares admission about Colorado football team's shortcomings in 2023
Deion Sanders told Joel Klatt during a "Big Noon Convo" that his Colorado football offensive line wasn't up to snuff during the 2023 season -- reiterating why he told teams to get them while they can following Oregon's 42-6 rout of CU in Week 4.
“You better get me now because I knew we didn’t have what we needed to play at that level of consistency," Sanders said. "We didn’t have what we needed to play at certain levels against certain teams. We didn’t have everything in-house. Although we may have believed that we could compete with them, in the trenches? I knew. I knew.
“Skill positions? Oh yeah, yeah. We got that because that’s the attractability that I come with with first off. So I’m going to attract the skill positions – we good, we go head-to-head with anybody. But, when it comes to those trenches, we didn’t have what we needed and that’s where we suffered."
Deion Sanders banking on major improvement from Colorado football OL in 2024
Sanders made it clear during the 2023 season that he was not a fan of the offensive line in front of Shedeur Sanders. In October, he called out his trenches after the group gave up 24 pressures, 17 hits, 13 knock-downs, and seven sacks in a 28-16 loss to UCLA.
“The big picture, you go get new lineman,” Sanders prefaced before saying, “That’s the picture and I’ma paint it perfectly.”
Coach Prime has that new OL now, and he can't use them as an excuse again for the 2024 season if the unit doesn't come together quick enough to give Shedeur the chance to help the Buffs win games in the Big 12.
Well, he can, but his credibility would take a hit if he found himself calling out the same problem in year two that he made the scapegoat in year one.
The best coaches solve problems and move on to the next one. If Coach Prime can't figure out how to solve his OL woes, he'll never be in that top coaching tier.
