Denver Post dismissive of Shedeur Sanders' top Colorado football QB backup
The Denver Post's Sean Keeler doesn't believe the starting quarterback for the Colorado football program in 2025 is currently on the roster -- specifically dismissing the idea of Shedeur Sanders' top backup, Ryan Staub.
"The most interesting story involving Shedeur Sanders and CU football right now is who follows him on the big stage. And I’m not talking about Lil Wayne," Keeler joked about the recent rumor that Lil Wayne's Black and Gold weekend concert had been deemed mandatory.
"Judge The Deion Sanders Era not by Shedeur, a quarterback who can carry a tune almost as well as he carries an offense. Oh, no. Judge it by Shedeur’s successor. As of Tuesday afternoon, the Buffs still didn’t have one yet. Sorry, Ryan Staub. We’ll always have Salt Lake."
Keeler's article was focused on Coach Prime's pursuit of Carrollton star Julian "JuJu" Lewis, who looks likely to de-commit from USC after 5-star EDGE Isaiah Gibson spurned Lincoln Riley on June 18. Auburn is making a strong push, while Indiana is a dark horse to land Lewis given his close connection with Tino Sunseri.
Why not Ryan Staub as Colorado football QB1 in 2025?
Staub may not be the flashiest name, but we know that Coach Prime sees him as starter material. Staub was never going to start over Shedeur in 2024, so Sanders implored the Stevenson Ranch (CA) product to find a new home to start at if he wanted to.
He didn't want to leave, though, and returned as Shedeur's primary backup under center at CU. That loyalty was certainly noticed by Coach Prime, who saw another exodus of recruits from his program throughout the offseason.
In 2025, if Staub continues to stick around, he will have been a three-year Prime Timer. There may not be many who'd be able to say the same thing.
While he may lack the pedigree of a Lewis, Staub will have plenty of intangibles on his side by the time 2025 rolls around.
