Oregon State, Wazzu, six ACC schools rumored to join the Big 12
According to longtime college sports radio host Greg Swaim, Oregon State and Wazzu are likely to be joined by six unnamed ACC teams in the Big 12 -- upping the league's current membership total of 16 to 24.
Swaim sees the Group of 5 becoming a Group of 7 and the Power 4 becoming the Power 3, with the ACC essentially being relegated.
"So was asked for the most likely prediction for Big 12 expansion, and that's an easy one...(Wazzu) and (Oregon State), with a very interesting, and highly complicated, financial deal, along with six of the #ACC teams to jump first to create the 24 team B12," Swaim said.
"Those that don't take the deal will get left behind to join what will become the G7 after the ACC drops out of what will become the P3. It's important to note that there won't be any basketball only members, as conference members have recently made that crystal clear."
This isn't the first time Swaim has thrown out the Beavs and Cougs as potential Big 12 members. Adding both would expand the conference into the Pacific Northwest, though one wonders if the ACC may have a chance of survival if they're able to survive the likely losses of FSU and Clemson; two programs whose immediate value has plummeted with three losses between the two in four games.
The ACC is also an option for Oregon State and Wazzu
Back in July, Swaim floated the ACC as a potential option for the "Pac-2," Oregon State and Wazzu, if the Big 12 doesn't work out for them.
"Wazzu and the Beavers do have a great shot to get back into a power conference, if either none of the ACC teams are able to get out, and then the Big 12 invites the pair," Swaim wrote on Twitter. "Of course if the ACC loses two or more teams, they may well be making a call to Pullman and Corvallis."
Oregon State and Wazzu own good wins in 2024, over San Diego State and Texas Tech in Week 2, respectively, but face their in-state rivals, Oregon and Washington of the Big Ten, on September 14. The Beavs and Cougs may see their fortunes changed imminently.
