According to Rivals' Adam Gorney, there are rumors that Colorado football cornerback Cormani McClain can hit the portal during the upcoming spring transfer window.

"In Sanders’ first class in 2023, the Buffaloes finished No. 31 overall, not great but certainly respectable, and Colorado ended with a bang by landing five-star cornerback Cormani McClain," Gorney prefaced before saying, "But there have been rumors again this offseason that McClain could consider the portal during the spring window after issues adapting in Boulder."

Mike Farrell (of the Mike Farrell Sports brand) deemed it impressive that McClain hadn't hit the portal already this offseason back in December.

"It is quite impressive that Cormani McClain hasn’t hit the portal," Farrell prefaced before saying, "After the Deion call out and with him hailing all the way from Florida I thought he was for sure a flight risk."

Cormani McClain leaving Colorado football would be massive failure for Deion Sanders

McClain leaving Boulder would need to serve as a wake-up call for Deion Sanders. Losing perhaps the second most talented defensive back and one of the purest talents on the team after calling him out publicly during the first few months of McClain's collegiate career would be incredibly bad optics. Even if Sanders tried to make it right by season's end.

In September, ahead of the Buffs' Week 5 USC matchup, Sanders put McClain on blast when asked why he hadn't debuted yet.

"Study," Sanders said to a reporter who inquired about McClain (h/t FanBuzz). "Prepare. Study. Prepare. Be on time for meetings. Show up to the darn meetings. Understand what we're doing as a scheme. Want to play this game. Desire to play this game. Desire to be the best in this game, at practice, in the film room. Uh, and on your own free time. You do know that I check film time for each player... I need film time from the whole staff, so I can see who's been preparing and that's not just about Cormani, that's about a multitude of them. So if I don't see that, you would be a fool to put somebody out there unprepared. Can't do it. Won't do it. Can't do it. I'm old school, I'm sorry."

Coach Prime said he was proud of McClain, but perhaps it's too little too late if Gorney's reporting is to be believed.
