Two-way Colorado football star Travis Hunter was taken No. 1 overall by PFF writer Ian Cummings's 2025 mock draft by the New England Patriots; interestingly enough, as a potential Drake Maye weapon first and foremost.

"The Patriots are better than you think," Cummings prefaced before saying, "And even if they end up picking this early, they’ll have a young core with momentum building heading into 2025. There’s only a sense that they need a few more weapons and playmakers. On both sides of the ball, Travis Hunter can suffice.

"If it were me, I’d try Hunter at WR first. Alongside a movement-Z like Ja’Lynn Polk, Hunter could be a stellar central force with his rare separation ability, RAC dynamism, and ball skills at the catch point. But he’d be a menace opposite Christian Gonzalez at CB, too. At 6’1″, 185 pounds, Hunter is a bit light, but he’s already a near-elite route runner with an absurd mix of explosiveness, speed, hip sink, bend, lateral agility, and throttle control. And at the catch point, his GPS-like ball tracking ability plays right into Maye’s style."

Two-way Colorado football star Travis Hunter being seen as a WR first and foremost

Hunter is getting more hype as a wideout heading into the 2024 season than he is on the defensive side of the ball. He'll likely have more memorable moments on that side of the ball, and several have come forward to endorse him as a WR first and foremost.

ESPN's draft expert Matt Miller agreed with Cummings: WR is the preferred position of choice for Hunter over corner.

"(WR's) where Hunter's speed and electric ability with the ball in his hands is best utilized, whereas at cornerback he would need to focus on technique more and rely less on winning with speed," Miller said (h/t BuffsBeat).

Hunter going No. 1 overall over a quarterback seems hard to envision now given how the 2024 NFL draft shook out in its QB-heavy top-12, but things change with wins and big plays.

Hunter can help make both a reality in 2024.
