Warren Sapp gives update on Colorado football hiring timeline
Warren Sapp gave an update on his Colorado football hiring status during the December 13 edition of Thee Pregame Show -- saying that he has a few screws to tighten, and Coach Prime has a decision to make on his side.
“I’ve got a couple more screws to tighten down, a couple more things to finish and I should have something to hang on the wall,” said Sapp (h/t BuffZone). “It’s gonna be on (Sanders) then. I’m gonna push the ball in his court. Whenever he gets the ball in his hand, I know what he’s gonna do with it. He’s taking it to the house.”
Deion Sanders had spoken in absolutes regarding Sapp on November 22, referring specifically to what the former NFL and The U star would bring to the Buffs in 2024.
"I'm excited about coach Sapp," Sanders said (h/t USA Today). "He's a dear friend that I love to life and he, he's going to be invaluable to what he brings to the table. The kids are going to love him. As far as their recruits as well, they're going to love him."
BuffZone's Brian Howell said that regardless of what his speculative title would be, Sapp "would certainly work with defensive linemen in some capacity."
Presumed Colorado football coaching hire Warren Sapp's preparedness for coaching questioned by analyst
Not everyone speaks of Sapp at CU with warmth and optimism. Footballscoop’s John Brice questioned if the 50-year-old seven-time Pro Bowl defender was prepared for an on-field role in Boulder.
“Sanders has yet to specify the potential role that Sapp is going to fill, and it’s unclear if Sapp already is qualified to be a full-time, on-field assistant coach — should Sanders have an opening on the defensive side of the ball,” Brice wrote.
What could be holding Coach Prime's Buffs onboarding process for Sapp is a question mark, but no hiring being the result of this waiting game would have the same sort of chaotic optics that Sean Lewis's sudden demotion had during the 2023 season.
