Shedeur Sanders compares NFL journey to Tom Brady: “My story is going to be similar”

After sliding to the fifth round in the NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders says his story will mirror Tom Brady’s. Based on early camp reports from Cleveland, he might be right.

The quote feels bold. It feels personal. It feels like Shedeur.

“My story is going to be similar [to Brady’s]. I was a late-round draft pick, but we’re here now, so none of that stuff matters.”

But if you actually listened to what Shedeur was saying, I believe it's more about "story" then about "Brady." Yes, his relationship with Brady means something, but his background, his spotlight, and the pressure he carries makes this comparison deeper than most realize.

Brady was under the radar. Shedeur has been center stage for years.

Let’s not rewrite history—Tom Brady was not a household name coming out of Michigan. Yes, he won the Orange Bowl. Yes, he led several comeback wins. But Michigan didn’t even know if he was the starter—they kept trying to shoehorn in Drew Henson because of his athletic upside and baseball pedigree.

Brady’s draft profile? He looked like an out-of-shape accountant in his infamous combine photo. There were no cameras following his every move. No NIL deals. No pressure from the media to carry a franchise on Day One. The Patriots didn’t draft him to save the team. They didn’t even draft him to play.

Shedeur? This is a whole different world.

Shedeur’s story started long before the NFL

Shedeur has never flown under the radar. He’s been in the spotlight since high school. At Jackson State, he was a freshman phenom. At Colorado, he became the face of a national media circus, the son of a Hall of Famer, the symbol of a Buffs revival.

Coach Prime might’ve been the showman, but Shedeur is the anchor.

He was projected as a top-five pick for most of the 2024 season. He’s not just an NFL quarterback—he’s a brand. He comes from an athletic dynasty. His father is Deion Sanders. His brother is in the league.

So yeah, when Shedeur says “my story is going to be similar,” he knows it’s not identical. He’s not trying to say he’s coming out of nowhere. He’s saying that like Brady, he’s going to make sure every team that passed on him regrets it.

The motivation is the same.

All eyes are on Shedeur

That’s what makes this so fascinating.

Tom Brady developed in the shadows. Nobody expected him to make the team, let alone become the greatest of all time. Shedeur doesn’t have that luxury. Everything he does will be compared, criticized, and reposted.

There’s no learning curve without headlines. No “just a rookie” grace period. From day one, Shedeur’s been in a room with Dillon Gabriel and Joe Flacco—and already, reports out of rookie camp say he looks like the best quarterback in Cleveland.

He’s not shocking anyone by performing well. He’s expected to.

That’s the edge Brady had.

A different path, but the same purpose

So no, this isn’t Brady 2.0. It’s not the same climb from obscurity. It’s a different hill. With brighter lights, louder critics, and way more people watching every step.

But Shedeur knows that. He wants that. Because deep down, I don’t think he wants to just match Brady’s story. I think he wants to write his own.

One that Buffs fans can proudly say started in Boulder. One where the son of Deion, who chose Colorado when nobody believed in it, goes on to show the world why he was built for this moment all along.
