Shedeur Sanders is under fire again.
The rookie quarterback is catching a lot of heat on social media following a "childish" stunt with reporters on Wednesday. When asked about his feelings about the Browns benching Joe Flacco in favor of fellow-rookie Dillon Gabriel, Sanders "mimed" his response. He moved his mouth, but no words came out:
After the Browns named Dillon Gabriel their new starting quarterback, Shedeur Sanders reacted with a full mime:

This was supposedly a response to Rex Ryan's recent heavy criticism of the former Colorado star. It landed like a lead balloon. Or, to take a cue from Sanders, it hit the invisible wall and couldn't escape.
It's just the latest example detractors will point to of Sanders' lack of maturity. It's the exact kind of stunt that NFL teams wanted to avoid, which was part of the impetus for his NFL Draft freefall. No NFL team wants distractions. They especially don't want distractions from a third-stringer.
Predictably, social media let Sanders have it.
People are letting Shedeur Sanders have it on social media
Crazy to see people playing dumb and defending this. This is not how a starting QB in the NFL acts. And I’ve been a Shedeur defender and believer https://t.co/lRr1DHQO1L

Well, good thing Sanders isn't the starter, I suppose?
One of the more childish immature things I've seen haha https://t.co/ldgzhDH99p
— David Andrews (@dandrews61) October 1, 2025
That's former New England Patriots OL David Andrews chiming in. A 10-year NFL veteran, Andrews has certainly seen a lot during his time.
One of the strangest things I've ever seen from a player https://t.co/mn7y5PVvsd

I've seen stranger, but I can also honestly say I've never seen a player do this before. In any sport.
Way to prove those maturity questions wrong Shedeur. https://t.co/aWAnHYxoS3

Surely Sanders knew this would cause more backlash? Right? Right?
This is the show teams knew they were getting and among the reasons he plummeted https://t.co/YB2euzjUJH

The prevailing narrative that Sanders opened himself up to now is "See?!? This is why teams didn't want to draft him! What a distraction!"
It's overblowing his actions yesterday, but the son of Deion Sanders was always going to be under a microscope.
Never in my life seen anything like this

Is he OK?
Whoever is giving him advice … he needs to get them out of his circle
This is sad https://t.co/pxxVMb33LH
I doubt anyone gave him this advice. This was a decision he made. He's his own person.
Sanders did have some people rush to his defense, so it wasn't all negative. Starting, predictably, with his father:
Coach Prime weighs in on Shedeur’s interview today 😂😂😂 https://t.co/xKHVw3UIhQ pic.twitter.com/qdTkEy4RN7
— ESPN Cleveland (@ESPNCleveland) October 1, 2025
Coach Prime was always going to rush to his son's defense, just like any father would. He's also probably jealous that he didn't think of doing this during his playing days.
I ain’t even here to comment on the actions. I’m cool with this. He having a good time. It’s actually pretty funny. I’m here to point out the fact yall can’t say my boy ain’t locked in, he a Sanders they always got hair cuts. He ain’t thinking bout no cut. He all about ball right… https://t.co/0nSxOBr32Q

Former NFL DT Gerald McCoy found Sanders' actions funny. The comment about his hair is also hilarious - he thinks Sanders has very clearly been in the lab working.
Rex Ryan: “This kid talks and he runs his mouth. Get your ass in the front row and study”#Browns Shedeur Sanders: *says nothing in response

The comments/media: “See this circus is why nobody wanted to draft him”
Simply cannot win.
The price of being a high-profile player is that everything you do is under a microscope. Sanders could have given a layered, mature answer, and someone, somewhere, would have still found fault in it.
Honestly the bigger issue here is so many in the media flocking to see if they can get a reaction from the 3rd stringer about the backup getting the job… which is how it’s supposed to be when you make a change https://t.co/wCiajzX4Dy

Trey Wingo gave perhaps the best take on the situation and said what everyone should be thinking. The media rushing to get Sanders' reaction to every living thing shouldn't be happening. It wouldn't happen for any other rookie third-stringer. It's a set-up for a sound - or lack thereof - bite.
