Shedeur Sanders gets crushed on social media (again) for 'childish' behavior

Shedeur Sanders is under fire again.

The rookie quarterback is catching a lot of heat on social media following a "childish" stunt with reporters on Wednesday. When asked about his feelings about the Browns benching Joe Flacco in favor of fellow-rookie Dillon Gabriel, Sanders "mimed" his response. He moved his mouth, but no words came out:

This was supposedly a response to Rex Ryan's recent heavy criticism of the former Colorado star. It landed like a lead balloon. Or, to take a cue from Sanders, it hit the invisible wall and couldn't escape.

It's just the latest example detractors will point to of Sanders' lack of maturity. It's the exact kind of stunt that NFL teams wanted to avoid, which was part of the impetus for his NFL Draft freefall. No NFL team wants distractions. They especially don't want distractions from a third-stringer.

Predictably, social media let Sanders have it.

Well, good thing Sanders isn't the starter, I suppose?

That's former New England Patriots OL David Andrews chiming in. A 10-year NFL veteran, Andrews has certainly seen a lot during his time.

I've seen stranger, but I can also honestly say I've never seen a player do this before. In any sport.

Surely Sanders knew this would cause more backlash? Right? Right?

The prevailing narrative that Sanders opened himself up to now is "See?!? This is why teams didn't want to draft him! What a distraction!"

It's overblowing his actions yesterday, but the son of Deion Sanders was always going to be under a microscope.

I doubt anyone gave him this advice. This was a decision he made. He's his own person.

Sanders did have some people rush to his defense, so it wasn't all negative. Starting, predictably, with his father:

Coach Prime was always going to rush to his son's defense, just like any father would. He's also probably jealous that he didn't think of doing this during his playing days.

Former NFL DT Gerald McCoy found Sanders' actions funny. The comment about his hair is also hilarious - he thinks Sanders has very clearly been in the lab working.

The price of being a high-profile player is that everything you do is under a microscope. Sanders could have given a layered, mature answer, and someone, somewhere, would have still found fault in it.

Trey Wingo gave perhaps the best take on the situation and said what everyone should be thinking. The media rushing to get Sanders' reaction to every living thing shouldn't be happening. It wouldn't happen for any other rookie third-stringer. It's a set-up for a sound - or lack thereof - bite.
