It makes sense that Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence would have a preference for Travis Hunter to spend the majority of his time on offense. Hunter is a dynamic playmaker, and Lawrence needs all the help he can get to move the offense forward.

Hunter has been terrific in Training Camp, proving to be an impossible cover for Jaguars DBs. He'll form a strong 1-2 punch at WR with Brian Thomas Jr., giving Lawrence his best set of weapons he has had in his short NFL career so far.

Hunter is hell-bent on playing both ways for the Jaguars, a pursuit his quarterback would prefer he call off to focus all of his time on offense:

Breaking up a pass or two a game is downplaying what Hunter is able to do defensively. He'll be a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball just like he is on offense. And there's no reason he can't do both.

Travis Hunter will play both ways for the Jaguars, regardless of what Trevor Lawrence prefers

On Jacksonville's initial preseason depth chart, Hunter was listed on offense and defense. He's listed as a starter at WR and a backup at CB. That makes sense, for now, considering he's just now ramping up his work on defense after spending all of rookie mini-camp working with the offense, along with the first part of Training Camp.

This will allow the Jaguars to slowly work Hunter into a two-way role, something that has been ramping up in the last week of camp.

While the Jaguars are desperate to turn things around and become a playoff team, they aren't going to do it to the detriment of Hunter's long-term future. They drafted him with the idea that he'll be a Jaguar for the next decade - not just for the 2025 season.

The Jaguars will open the preseason on Saturday at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It remains to be seen how much, if any, Hunter will play in his preseason debut. Some teams play their starters the first week of preseason, while others throw a rookie QB to the wolves with backups playing against the other team's starters.

Fortunately, the Jaguars care about Hunter's development and long-term potential and will do right by him. Unlike how the Browns are handling Shedeur Sanders.
