Expectations are sky-high for Travis Hunter, being the No. 2 overall pick. Through his first offseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the former Colorado standout is doing exactly what we've all expected.

He's showing he belongs.

Speaking to reporters at minicamp last week, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had high praise for the rookie wide receiver and cornerback, citing Hunter’s early growth and maturity as he begins what could be a historic NFL journey.

“He’s grown a lot,” Lawrence said. “There’s a lot obviously being thrown on him — being a high pick, playing both ways… I can understand being drafted high and expectations, but as far as playing both ways? That’s another world.”

Developing chemistry

Lawrence also revealed that he and Hunter plan to train together during the team’s break before training camp, a sign the quarterback is seriously investing in Hunter's development.

“We plan on getting together quite a bit and throwing, getting some timing down, but also just talking through the system,” Lawrence said. “I’m really excited just to see him continue to get better. He’s a special player on both sides of the ball.”

For Hunter, that extra work could be crucial. He’ll be able to better adjust to NFL speed, complexity, and physicality at both receiver and corner.

But if minicamp was any indication, the transition is already progressing very positively.

Hunter’s role will be unprecedented

The Jaguars didn’t trade up to No. 2 overall without a clear vision. New head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone have made it clear that Hunter isn’t just a gadget player — he’s the core piece of their roster plan.

How exactly Jacksonville uses him remains to be seen. But Lawrence, who is still seeking to solidify himself among the league’s top quarterbacks, sounds eager to make Hunter the focal point of the offense.

That chemistry won’t just matter in the red zone. It could define how well Travis adapts to having the most demanding two-way responsibilities in league history.

The bigger picture

For Buffs fans, Hunter's Week 1 matchup vs the Carolina Panthers will be more than just another NFL storyline. Hunter was a symbol of Colorado’s rebirth under Deion Sanders and delivered in every possible way.

Now, his journey will continue on a massive stage and with a quarterback who knows firsthand what it means to carry the burden of expectation.

“You want to get your mind right and be ready to go… but you also gotta really be prepared,” Lawrence added. “He’s got some time to get into his playbook and learn the system.”

Hunter has never been short on confidence or composure. And with a quarterback willing to put in extra work and a coaching staff committed to his development, the foundation is being laid for something special.
