It was a tough outing from the start from Colorado’s own Mikaela Shiffrin. Hailing from Vail Colorado she is still destined to make the entire state proud with many disciplines yet to come. The Giant Slolam is one of her best events and she fell off the line early on. She was not the only skier to come out of the gates too aggressive and have it cost her. It was disappointing for Shiffrin not to be able to contend her title as Olympic gold medalist in the Giant Slolam but she knows she has to shake it off and continue on to the next. She has four more events she could possibly medal in.

Fellow U.S. skier Nina O’Brien suffered a scary crash at the bottom of the hill as well. All our prayers go out to her in this time for her recovery.

Her next opportunity for a medal will be on Wednesday for the Alpine Slolam race. It was an event she won gold in back on Sochi, and the youngest skier ever to do it. Lindsey Vonn another well known face of Olympic skiing said she just needs to reset.

One athlete who did not falter was CU Buff’s own Magdalena Luczak. She took her turn on the second run of the Giant Slolam finishing in 26th place. 7.16 seconds behind the leader and gold medalist Swedens Sara Hector. Luczak improved off the time of her first run and finished in a respectable place on a very tough hill.

Canadaian and fellow CU teammate Cass Gray ended up with the same fate Mikaela Shiffrin did faltering in the first run.

Biathlon also took place early Monday. The women’s 15 k individual race went underway and Colorado’s pride and sharp shooter Joanne Reid missed quite a few of her shots and wound up in 57th place. Still these three athletes are representing their countries and representing the Buffs so well.

Next up for the Buffs is some more cross-country skiing. Poland’s Weronika Kaleta will be starting in third position on Tuesday. Petra Hyncicova will be in the same race making her second appearence in the games after finishing in 26 place in the 7.5 meter Skiathlon. Petra will be starting in the 21rst slot. It takes place Tuesday at 3:00 a.m. ET, 1:00 a.m. MT.
