Colorado football overcame a first-half deficit and broke a tie with under a minute left to overcome Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium on October 7 — capturing the Week 6 win with “the play of the season so far” according to The Denver Gazzette’s Tyler King.

“What a win for the CU Buffs, who snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-2 (1-2 Pac-12) under Deion Sanders,” King prefaced before saying, “Alejandro Mata’s 43-yard FG with 12 seconds left is the play of the season so far.”

CU snaps a two-game losing streak and surpasses the team’s modest 3.5 preseason over/under win total projection from the sportsbooks; this after Coach Prime called out the special teams for “not being special” through the early portion of the season.

Colorado football wins game ‘they simply had to have’

Denver Sports’s Will Petersen stressed the importance of the win for Colorado football in the moments following the 27-24 triumph by claiming that it was a game the Buffs “simply had to have.”

“For Coach Prime’s group, it was a contest they simply had to have,” Petersen prefaced before saying, “The were blown out by the Ducks and then had a furious rally against the Trojans last week, but still came up short. This gets things back on track, and should have CU feeling like they’re a team that can play in the postseason.”

After a 42-6 blowout loss to Oregon and a spectacular near-comeback against USC, Colorado risked losing the narrative on the season; with their last win squeaked out at home against Colorado State at home as three-score favorites. Now, they have a chance to have five wins heading into their bye week with Stanford on the schedule next.

Credit Shedeur Sanders’ timely 43-yard pass to Javon Antonio that got the Buffs into field goal territory, and celebrate Mata for providing CU with the most special moment of the season via a special teams unit that finally had their “prove-it” outing in the eyes of Coach Prime.
