A mock draft from FanSided’s Cody Williams would replace struggling Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Kenny Pickett with Colorado football star Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Williams believes there’s a growing sentiment that the former Pitt Panther isn’t the right fit as QB1 regardless of the personnel on the coaching staff.

“We’ve started to see Kenny Pickett not take the leap that was hoped for in the 2023 season,” Williams prefaced before saying, “There’s a good chance that a big reason for that is the shortcomings of offensive coordinator Matt Canada, but there also might be a belief creeping into the building that Pickett isn’t the right quarterback for this team.

“Should that feeling progress, then they could take a swing at Shedeur Sanders. The Colorado quarterback made the jump to the FBS level this season and has looked great. Even behind a poor Buffaloes offensive line, his accuracy and mechanics are quite impressive and the numbers back that up. There’s a good chance he stays with his dad for the 2024 season, but if he enters the draft, he could be a first-rounder at this point in the draft.”

Shedeur Sanders isn’t leaving Colorado football in 2024 and may not be a first-round draft pick anyway

Sanders has outperformed most expectations thus far in 2023, leading the Buffs to surpass their over/under preseason projection halfway through the season, but he is not yet a first-round pick. And even if he was, he wouldn’t be leaving the program as his father leads Colorado football back into the Big 12.

Without Shedeur, it’s not a stretch to say that CU’s offense would nose-dive in 2024 without an improved run game; which should come as offensive line transfers flock to Boulder to aim to be a savior at the Buffs’ least impressive position group thus far, but still isn’t a guarantee.

As fun as it would be to see Sanders at the next level, it would also work against Coach Prime sticking with Colorado. The longer Shedeur stays at CU, the more Coach Prime will have to lose by leaving.
