Despite Colorado QB commitment, ‘always likely’ Coach Prime scouts portal
Despite 2025 Colorado football quarterback commit Antwann Hill Jr. claiming that Coach Prime will hand him the keys to the Buffs offense once Shedeur Sanders leaves the program, Denver Sports’ Jake Shapiro believes Deion Sanders and Co. will still be scouting the transfer portal for competition; or potentially, a more experienced upgrade.
“It seemed obvious that Hill will be part of Colorado’s post-Shedeur Sanders plan, who is NFL Draft eligible this spring but is likely to stay on campus for his senior season in 2024,” Shapiro prefaced before saying, “That would mean a smooth transition between Sanders and Hill, though, of course, it’s always like that Coach Prime takes a look at the transfer portal.”
Handing the ball to Shedeur, who established himself over two years at Jackson State, is a much different prospect than handing the ball to a proven entity at the high school ranks who hasn’t taken a snap at the collegiate level. Then again, it’s not as though the Buffs QB room has much depth behind Sanders as it is. Perhaps Hill is the plan.
Communication key in Antwann Hill Jr.’s Colorado football commitment
If Coach Prime overpromised Hill to get him to choose Colorado and is set to underdeliver, the program could lose goodwill with recruits who won’t take the Buffs head coach’s words seriously in the future.
“What led me there is, first, their communication,” Hill said of why he chose Colorado (h/t On3). “They always communicated with me since the time 12:00 am hit that morning on Aug 1st. To sum it up I can tell they really care about me and want me to take over the program when Shedeur leaves. So whenever coach Prime said that, I knew he was being 100% honest with me and I knew I would be a fool not take this opportunity that coach Prime had provided me with.”
If that was merely an empty promise from Coach Prime to the Warner Robins (GA) Houston County High star, with a transfer portal option able to swoop in and take all of that away, the Deion attacks will only intensify.
