Demoted Colorado football co-offensive coordinator Sean Lewis, who had his play-calling duties stripped by Coach Prime on November 3 to the benefit of promoted co-offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, was deemed a “natural fit” for the newly-vacated Syracuse head coaching job by CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee; this after Dino Babers was dismissed as Orange head coach after seven years in charge.

“Lewis is a natural fit for a program that needs a jolt,” Salee prefaced before saying, “He was demoted by Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders during the 2023 season, less than one year after he left the head coaching job at Kent State to join ‘Coach Prime’s’ staff in Boulder. He compiled a 24-31 record in five seasons with the Golden Flashes (2018-22), won the MAC East in 2021 and earned two bowl appearances. His work as the Syracuse co-offensive coordinator two years prior to his Kent State tenure gives him plenty of knowledge about the challenges that exist with the Orange.”

Lewis was in Central New York for the first two years of the Babers era as Syracuse’s offensive coordinator. A return is certainly a possibility for Lewis, who was also linked to the Michigan State head coaching vacancy.

Sean Lewis leaving Colorado football for Michigan State ‘intensified’ before demotion

Following Mel Tucker’s firing from Michigan State, Lewis’ candidacy for the Spartans coaching job “intensified” according to BuffsBeat’s Josh Tolle.

“While this isn’t news for anyone paying attention to the rumors, (Lewis to Michigan State) has intensified with CU’s offensive mastermind being demoted this past week,” Tolle prefaced on November 4 before saying, “Deion Sanders took play-calling duties away from Lewis and elevated former NFL coach Pat Shurmur from an outside analyst to co-offensive coordinator.”

Whether Lewis would prefer a return to Syracuse over a first-time foray into the Big Ten coaching waters is unclear.

The man Coach Prime dismissed as play-caller has options, though.
