The Colorado football program has a “slight fracture” behind the scenes due to Coach Prime’s preferential treatment of his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, according to Mike Farrell of the Mike Farrell Sports brand.

“(Colorado) has clearly become “Daddy Ball” in Boulder, more so in regards to Shedeur than Shilo, and I’m hearing there is a slight fracture within the program because of it,” Farrell wrote. “Has Deion ever once criticized his son at QB? If he has, I’ve missed it. And yes, Shedeur has excellent stats with 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns with only 3 interceptions. But how about when he holds onto the ball way too long, as many NFL scouts and GMs are concerned about? Deion blames the offensive line and demotes his OC. And when he puts Travis Hunter back in the game with a lacerated liver but pulls Shedeur out of the Washington State game for fear he’ll get hurt. It becomes more and more obvious that this is about Deion and his sons and not about the team.”

More than likely, Deion Sanders’ preferential treatment extends beyond just his two sons; likely including Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horn Jr., and Xavier Weaver. Coach Prime has shown a preference towards skill position players. Still, he also has a soft spot for safety-turned-linebacker Trevor Woods, and he’s also complimented the likes of linebacker Jordan Domineck and offensive tackle Savion Washington.

Coach Prime is too focused on skill positions and is not focusing enough on the Colorado football trenches

The overall issue with Sanders during the 2023 season is/was his hyperfocus on everything but the trenches, which played out in an ugly way for his son Shedeur — who had to leave the game during CU’s embarrassing 56-14 loss to Wazzu after all of the hits his porous offensive line allowed all season caught up to him on November 17.

Defensively, though Coach Prime does dish out shoutouts regularly, he finds himself focused on the defensive backs, especially on the recruiting trail, which is only natural considering he played at cornerback and his top overall recruit and son are DBs.

In general, Coach Prime doesn’t focus enough on the trenches on either side of the ball, and it has resulted in the losses piling up and every other player on the roster looking worse by proxy.

If this isn’t fixed, don’t expect Sanders to coach beyond a second year in Boulder after both of his kids (and more than likely Hunter as well) enter the 2025 NFL draft pool.
