Amidst the wild rumors that Colorado Buffaloes football head coach Deion Sanders is potentially heading to the Dallas Cowboys, the Buffaloes have been in talks to renegotiate Sanders’ contract.
Sanders has been very impressive in his first two seasons with the Buffaloes, even taking the once perpetually struggling team to a 9-4 record with Big 12 title contention, though they fell out of the race after their loss to Kansas.
Coach Prime’s potential jump has been the story of the offseason so far, and teams like the Dallas Cowboys have been showing significant interest in his coaching services -- but the Buffaloes obviously don’t want that to happen.
FOX Sports analyst and Colorado alum Joel Klatt shared on The Herd that Sanders and the Buffaloes had engaged in contract talks.
“Nothing is finalized. He could leave his contract as is. I know that there’s been extension conversations. I know Colorado has come significantly up," Klatt said. "I think he would like them to come up in several areas, not just his salary, but possibly assistant pool, facility stuff, commitment to NIL, outside of revenue sharing."
Worth noting is it’s clearly not just about the money for Sanders. As Klatt mentioned, Sanders wants more control over his assistants (specifically, who they are), changes in NIL, and much more.
This all pales in comparison to the fact that Sanders could find himself with the potential to coach his son, Shedeur Sanders, again. It’s reasonable to believe that, if presented with the opportunity, Coach Prime will ditch the Buffaloes to coach his son again.
So, all of these contract talks could admittedly be in vain. Sure, Sanders can likely get the Buffs franchise to agree to almost anything, but there’s still the one thing Colorado can’t give him anymore– his son.
