Deion Sanders has been a frequent flier as far as headlines go, yet he may have outdone himself this week with the recent news that he’d been speaking to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about the Cowboys’ recently vacated head coaching spot.
Speculation has run amuck in the time since, with many believing we’ve seen the last of Sanders coaching college ball– but Colorado news site DNVR isn’t so sure. Their own Scott Proctor gave three reasons to discredit this idea as “the definition of a pipe dream.”
First, Sanders’ buyout. It’ll cost any NFL team $8 million to simply take Sanders from the Buffaloes, not even including the cost of his salary or other exorbitant demands.
Second (and the most convincing, in my opinion), is the fact that Deion will not be able to coach his sons if he was to take the Dallas job. Sanders has long since held that he’ll only coach in the NFL if his sons are a part of the picture, and Dallas simply has no need for a QB like Shedeur Sanders with a highly-compensated one like Dak Prescott in the saddle.
Finally, there’s the matter of Coach Prime’s love for Colorado. Sanders went as far as to tell Adam Schefter Monday night that “I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
If we’re honest with ourselves, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders is likely not going anywhere from Colorado, and certainly not to Dallas. If anything, he’d likely join the Raiders, who are likely to draft his son Shedeur.
