Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy Saturday night, putting the cherry on top of college football's all-time versatile season. The receiver/corner won the Bednarik and Biletnikoff Awards on both sides of the ball, but did he deserve the Heisman?
Well, let's compare him to the other candidates.
Cam Ward and Dillon Gabriel each had a minimal case. While Ward put up the gaudiest stats from the QB position and Gabriel led the FBS's only undefeated team, Miami's lack of an ACC Championship appearance and Oregon's overall talent level held the two back from true consideration. Ward and Gabriel were in New York because there had to be four candidates, and the best statistical QB and QB on the best team had to get invites. The award is usually won by QBs after all.
With them out of the way, let's look at Ashton Jeanty. The Boise State running back had 2,497 yards, the fourth-most in FBS history, and didn't have a game of less than 127 rushing yards. His 192 yards and three touchdowns against Oregon put to rest the "soft schedule" argument since many believe playing a Mountain West schedule disqualified him from the award.
Many wanted to see Jeanty win the award and shared their feelings he was robbed on Twitter.
Ultimately, Jeanty has a chance to achieve team success with the Broncos that Hunter wishes he could with the Buffs. Boise State is heading to the College Football Playoff as the No. 3 seed while Hunter and Co. are heading to the Alamo Bowl.
Saturday was Hunter's night, though, regardless of what fans had to say about it.
