Coach Prime, his ex-wife Pilar, and star Colorado football quarterback Shedeur Sanders are part of a broader narrative of family support for CU women's basketball player, Shelomi Sanders, scribes Essentially Sports' Soheli Tarafdar -- who chronicled the family's public return together during the No. 5 Buffs' season.
"The Colorado women’s basketball stands have witnessed more than just Sanders’ exuberant cheers in this season," Tarafdar prefaced before saying, "It transpired into a family union as Deion’s son, Shedeur and ex-wife Pilar have also been part of the collective celebration. The unity among the Sanders family members showcased a broader narrative of family support."
CU women's hoops knocked off the No. 8 (for now) Stanford Cardinal at the CU Events Center on January 14. Bossy Sanders didn't play, but the "Prime Time" energy was felt in Boulder. As was, perhaps more importantly, unity for the Sanders family.
Coach Prime brought sons from Jackson State to Colorado football and Shelomi Sanders to CU women's hoops
In many ways, Coach Prime is having a second act in sports after retirement, and at this point, even amputation of his toes, to get closer to his kids. As Tarafdar points out, Deion Sanders didn't have custody of his kids -- but he now gets to be around them on the University of Colorado's campus.
It's a love story in many ways, Coach Prime's time in Boulder, and before that, Jackson, Mississippi. And it's beautiful from that point of view. Of course, countless families could counter that Sanders' cold dismissals of any 2022 Buffs player he cut was anything but beautiful. And that point of view would be just as legitimate.
The love story coming together coinciding with JR Payne's Buffs ascending up the rankings toward the top of the college basketball world makes it all the sweeter.
