Taking Colorado football DC job would be move that fits Rex Ryan's personality
Rex Ryan taking the Colorado football defensive coordinator job vacated by Charles Kelly's Auburn jump would be a move befitting of Ryan's personality, says BuffsBeat's Brian Schaible.
"While this may seem like a long shot, if you have seen the video of Rex Ryan visiting Jackson State in 2021, it’s pretty obvious there’s mutual admiration," Schaible wrote of the possibility the 61-year-old becomes CU's DC.
"The current ESPN analyst just turned 61 last month, and surprisingly, has been out of coaching since 2016. While I’m sure he’s enjoying the spotlight and paycheck that comes with his big network appearances, this is the kind of move that fits his personality. His defensive schemes would cause all kinds of havoc in the Big 12. It would be a dream scenario."
Radio host wants to see long shot Colorado football DC option Rex Ryan back with Jets
WFAN's Joe Benigno said in December that he'd like to see Ryan reunite with the New York Jets, which he coached from 2009-2014 and produced two straight AFC Championship Game appearances during his first two years in the Big Apple.
“You know, I wouldn't mind having Rex [Ryan] back,” Joe said (h/t Audacy). “Rex and Mike Tannenbaum back together again. Wouldn't be the worst thing.
“And I'll tell you right now, you know this, Rex would run back here to coach this team. He's got such a chip on his shoulder that you’d need a wheelbarrow to bring the chip with him.”
Ryan is certainly the kind of coach who can help Buffs recruits understand what the NFL demands of potential draftees, but his name hasn't seriously been connected to any coaching job since his last season with the Buffalo Bills in 2016. Pat McAfee incorrectly stated that Ryan could become the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator this past season.
Don't expect Ryan on Coach Prime's staff, or anyone else's, this coming fall.
