Deion Sanders accused of usurping Pat Shurmur, calling plays for Colorado football
Deion Sanders was accused of usurping his hand-picked Colorado football offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, late during the Buffs' 28-9 win over CSU on September 14. The worst part about the accusation for Coach Prime was that it was thrown by CBS announcer Ross Tucker on-air.
When Shedeur Sanders was once again throwing the ball and not running/kneeing the clock out in the fourth quarter up three scores, risking injury to both himself and his teammates, Tucker spoke out against the nonsensical offensive strategy; believing Shurmur would never do this and that Coach Prime was the mastermind behind it.
"I gotta be honest with you," Tucker prefaced to colleague Rich Waltz before saying, "I think this has to be coming from Deion Sanders. Because I just can't imagine this is what Pat Shurmur would want to be doing in this situation. I mean, he's a three-time NFL head coach. I think Pat would just be taking a knee and winning the football game and not taking a chance that any offensive linemen gets hurt or the quarterback gets hit again. Now they're going for it on fourth down."
Deion Sanders is losing even when Colorado football wins
Sanders said it himself after the Buffs squeaked by North Dakota State 31-26 in Week 1: he doesn't feel like he won despite the final score. Against CSU, there were no doubts that his team was superior, but it has to feel like a loss that his meddling as a coach is more of a storyline.
Shedeur taking to the air late in games is neither smart nor productive. Stat-padding isn't going to make him any extra money when he gets to the NFL. But showing little discipline may cost him a few million if his draft spot slips because front offices are scared off by the "Grown QB" only doing things his way.
