CU AD Rick George met with BuffZone's Brian Howell on December 6 and updated the Boulder-based reporter on Deion Sanders' contract negotiations with Colorado football and how long he'd be in his role.
"Met with Colorado AD Rick George, who told me he and head football coach Deion Sanders have discussed a contract extension and will continue to have discussions after the season is over. After this year, Sanders has three years remaining on his original 5-year deal," Howell tweeted.
"Colorado AD Rick George has said he doesn't plan to work past his current contract, which expires June 30, 2026. But, he told me, 'I’m not ready to say, ‘OK, I’ll definitely be done in two years.' … It’s fun to win again and I like what (Deion Sanders) is doing,'" Howell added.
We knew contract negotiations would heat up after a 9-3 finish to the 2024 season. George is clearly tethering himself to Coach Prime and is dead set on getting a long-term commitment from Sanders before he rides off into the sunset.
As George as learning, though, walking away from "Prime Time" is harder than it sounds. Especially since Coach Prime was his call to begin with.
Sanders was one of the most successful hires in the University of Colorado Boulder. Revenue-wise, it was the most successful. Until there's championship hardware in some form, it can't be considered the overall best, but it's already up there considering where CU was before Coach Prime arrived.
George did that. And until he's grown tired of watching his creation crush it on and off the field, he may extend his tenure in Boulder.
Certainly, no one is rushing him out.
