Shedeur Sanders had an answer ready when asked how much he has improved while waiting behind Deshaun Watson this season. But anyone hoping for a detailed scouting report will have to wait a little longer.
“I guess we’ll see,” Sanders said Wednesday. “I guess we’ll see.”
For Colorado fans anxious to watch their former quarterback get another extended NFL opportunity, that answer could soon be put to the test. Watson is in concussion protocol, and Sanders could start for the Cleveland Browns against the New Orleans Saints.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported that the expectation around Browns headquarters Wednesday was that Sanders would start. Head coach Todd Monken had not ruled Watson out, leaving the assignment conditional.
Shedeur approached the possibility by explaining that last season’s experience gave him a better understanding of the demands of NFL games and the work he needed to do afterward.
“Last year I say I was able to see what I need to see, feel different things during the games and understand what I need to get better at,” Sanders said.
Shedeur Sanders is keeping his emotions steady while he waits
Sanders began his answer about last season by openly expressing appreciation for the people who kept him in Cleveland’s plans. Before getting too much into his development, or any reference tohow he thrived under Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, he thanked the coaching staff, Andrew Berry and the organization for another chance to be there this season.
“I’m focused on this game. Anything else really don’t matter at this point, you know...When I smile, just know that means something,” Sanders said. “I’m maturing.”
The former Buffaloes QB also described why a possible return to the starting lineup would not send his emotions soaring. He pointed to the uncertainty he has experienced throughout his first year and a half in the NFL, and not knowing exactly where he would land on the depth chart from week to week.
“I would say I had a lot of ups and downs, you know, in my life so far,” Sanders said. “I tend to not even get really too excited, you know, when it comes to things.”
Colorado fans have plenty of reason to watch if Sanders gets the nod against New Orleans. For now, he’s keeping his assessment of the work behind that opportunity short. The next time he takes the field could tell the rest of the story.
