Deion Sanders has built a career around making an entrance. If Coach Prime ever decides to exit the college football sideline, he won’t be short on potential career paths. Here are six jobs that could keep him busy.
1. Commercial Star
This one is already a given, but it belongs on the list. Prime could keep adding to his commercial résumé, and his unmistakable style that has endorsed everything from cars, shoes, adult diapers, insurance, sunglasses, and almonds.
2. GM and Face of Colorado
Colorado could bring in a new coach and reassign Sanders to a role focused on brand building and growing the program. He could still be a big part of player acquisition and welcoming prospects and families to Boulder while continuing to promote the Buffs nationally. He could even do home visits and attend high school games. Okay, maybe that's going a little too far.
If Colorado fired him, the school could owe him a substantial buyout. His contract says that if the university ends the deal without cause, it must pay 75% of his remaining base and supplemental salary in monthly installments. Reassignment would take Sanders’s approval, but it could give Colorado a chance to keep Prime’s name, influence and recruiting appeal working for the school instead of simply writing a check.
3. Talk Show Host
Sanders has already hosted We Got Time Today with Rocsi Diaz, discussing sports, news, culture and entertainment and interviewing guests. He wouldn’t be starting from scratch.
The next step could be a bigger platform or a regular debate show. Imagine Prime alongside Shannon Sharpe or Skip Bayless, or maybe regular appearance on ESPN's First Take. He would be highly coveted by any and all networks.
4. Run for Office
Sanders has stepped into the political conversation by publicly supporting the Protect College Sports Act. It's first time we've seen Coach Prime willing to use his platform on an issue he cares about.
Could Prime appeal to voters across party lines? His name recognition and charisma would give him a head start most candidates can only dream about. As for where and for he would run for, that's all very much to be determined.
5. Speaking Tour
Sanders has plenty of experience speaking to crowds in the convention and conference circuit. He could turn that side hustle into a national tour, sharing lessons about confidence, faith, family, leadership and the road from athlete to coach.
Recent scrutiny surrounding Life Surge and Tim Tebow’s decision to pause his relationship with the organization shows how closely audiences watch celebrity-led events and the groups behind them. Sanders could capitalize on their missteps and seize the opportunity to build a speaking platform with a clear purpose, strong partners and a message of his own.
I have no doubt that Coach Prime could fill arenas from coast to coast.
6. Prime Boardroom
Who wouldn't want Deion Sanders on their board of directors? Some companies might want his business expertise. Others might be looking for a famous face, a recognizable name and one more vote when the CEO brings a proposal to the table.
Coach Prime could be the ultimate high-profile board member, adding star power to the room and making the quarterly meeting sound a little more interesting than it did before.
Of course, there’s always the option of staying right where he is. That role already comes with a national platform and a pretty clear set of job requirements and expectations. Simply, the Colorado Buffaloes need to win football games.
If Prime can make that adjustment, he may not need a career change at all.
