Texas Tech overcame a bumpy start and a depleted backfield to beat Colorado 29–7, improving to 5–0 and 2–0 in Big 12 play. Afterward, coach Joey McGuire praised Colorado’s offensive preparation and described the adjustments that helped the Red Raiders take control.
Colorado scored on its opening possession, and McGuire said its offense presented a wide range of looks. Texas Tech settled in, created four turnovers and applied pressure. The Red Raiders also dropped three interception chances, McGuire said.
“I thought Brennan Marion did a great job, their offensive coordinator,” McGuire said. “I think I saw everything that you could possibly see on offense.”
The Red Raiders had to adjust on offense, too. Quarterback Tommy Castellanos was ruled out Friday, and running back Cameron Dickey left with an ankle injury. McGuire said those absences forced Texas Tech to scrap much of its quarterback run game and several planned trick plays.
Both teams have a much-needed bye next week to heal up. McGuire said Texas Tech will use the time for self-scouting and to help injured players recover.
Before the game, McGuire discussed his relationship with Deion Sanders on his coaching show. Their connection began when Sanders’ son Bucky transferred to Cedar Hill, where McGuire was coaching. McGuire said he called a mutual friend, David, to ask what Sanders was like.
“He said, ‘He’s the best teammate I’ve ever had,’” McGuire recalled. The friend also told him, “Deion and Prime are two different things. Two different people. Prime is a branding.”
McGuire said Sanders trusted him to coach his son and hold him accountable. He called Sanders “one of the best dads of a player that I’ve ever coached” and said the two developed a strong relationship.
McGuire also praised Sanders’ skill at building his public brand, comparing his ability to brand himself with figures such as Michael Jordan. The comments offered a personal look at their relationship, even as McGuire’s postgame focus stayed on Texas Tech’s win.
“Whatever the game is, we’re going to try to find a way to win it,” McGuire said. This time, four takeaways helped the Red Raiders do exactly that.
With the loss, Colorado drops to 2-3 and 0-2 in the Big 12. There are some critical conference tests coming against Utah, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Houston, and Arizona State that will determine whether this year's Buffs can win six games and qualify for a bowl.
