Colorado Buffaloes: Coach Karl Dorrell says Colorado has the best depth in 2 seasons
By Shay McBryde
On the Hull Show head coach Karl Dorrell spoke on Colorado sports radio on Thursday. Karl said things are going great and took the time out of his busy schedule to speak to Brady Hull. The topic of the transfers portal came up and the chaos ensued with it.
Dorrell said it was a relief for both signing days. There were 19 signees in December and 11 through the portal and signing day in February, with 30 new members in all. He said it did make recruiting very challenging.
The portal is very much like nomadic action according to Dorrell, with the coming and goings through the portal. He claimed it is going well though. The work they’ve done to replace the players they’ve lost, and the additions that were made are really significant pieces. The guys that they achieved they think can help them and in a lot of ways, and maybe even greater than the guys who have left.
While the portal can be challenging coach Dorrell thinks it’s also a good thing. They were able to bring in guys with experience already who are hungry and ready to work hard for them. It’s not like bringing in high school kids who have to learn the system. They’ve played before and they know what’s expected. Experience is a big factor. Karl thinks there are advantages and disadvantages but it has been working out for them so far.
Restriction for the portal also came up in the podcast. Head coach Dorrell spoke his thoughts on this:
"“It definitely makes it more difficult for me. I just feel the window of time to do it is pretty big. I wish there were some restrictions on that. It is beneficial for both sides but I would say not everybody is going to be in a situation where the grass is greener on the other side. That’s the question that is a little bit more of a challenge for some of these guys, that particularly might have had an impactful last season. They might be going to a situation where they’re not playing as much. Those are the things that they have weigh and consider when they make the decision to leave.”“It definitely makes it more difficult for me. I just feel the window of time to do it is pretty big. He feels at some point in time there will be some restrictions and reform eventually. At a certain point the NCAA will balance it out so every party can be happy. Dorrell also spoke on recruiting early and not checking in on his players was still a mistake. It’s a process and they are learning but they in good shape according to him. It is a hard balance and one that they are ironing out.
"“Our communication has to be better, both with our current players and keeping them involved and impacted in our program, and then obviously with the new ones coming in. We will have to work on both those areas. Things will be fine.” -Said Dorrell on his lack of communication with his former players.“Our communication has to be better, both with our current players and keeping them involved and impacted in our program, and then obviously with the new ones coming in. Several new coaches came up in the discussion. Dorrell said there is a lot of new energy and much excitement. They are great coaches, great mentors, their innovative. They have great energy. They are very passionate about young people. They like to invest time in terms of developing these players both on and off the field. He feels like this is the best staff they’ve been able to assemble in all of his time at Colorado.
On the end of the chat the quarterback topic came about. How Colorado has brought in more competition for Brendon Lewis. Coach Dorrell thought what Lewis accomplished last year was a solid year for him for a first time freshman playing. He didn’t throw many interceptions. Lewis may hold onto the ball too much but he won’t turn the ball over with bad plays just to get rid of it.
Shrout is looking to come back off of injury to do some things. Drew Carter last years back up and Maddox Kopp from Houston will be looking to show off their talents. Newcomer Owen McCown will also be coming in to shake things up as well. So the quarterback spot for this season will be highly competitive. Something Coach Dorrell thinks will give them the depth that the Buffaloes have not had in 2 seasons.
