Deion Sanders wasn’t ready to make a decision about Colorado’s quarterback situation after the Buffaloes’ 23–13 loss to Baylor. He wanted time to think it through on the plane ride home.
“Let me digest this game,” Sanders said. “I’m a little upset right now, but I’m going to be kind because you guys are some of my favorites. Let me think that through on the plane.”
Sanders had replaced Julian Lewis with Isaac Wilson during the game, a decision he said was his responsibility. Colorado’s offense needed a spark, he explained, and he wanted to get the Buffaloes moving and scoring.
“I’ll take the responsibility,” Sanders said. “It was a decision that I made because I was trying to get us going. That’s it. Just based on, let’s go. We got to get going. We got to score.”
Wilson completed 12 of 25 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions. Lewis was 11 of 16 for 75 yards. Sanders said Wilson looked shaky at first, then settled down and got the offense down the field.
The coach said he gave Wilson a specific message about his role: “You don’t have to be the man. Just get the ball to the men and we’re good.”
Sanders also described the quarterback choices as serving different purposes. He said turning to Kaneal Sweetwyne would represent a longer-term decision, while Wilson could come in to settle the offense and do his job.
“When you go to Sweetwyne, that’s more of a long-term type of thought process,” Sanders said. “When you go to Isaac, it’s almost like Isaac’s going to come in and clean it up.”
For now, Sanders said he needed to review the game before deciding what the rotation would look like going forward. He also cautioned against writing off Lewis after the change.
“Don’t give up on Juju,” Sanders said. “That kid, I think he plays with tremendous effort and tremendous heart. He’s not quitting and he’s not abandoning anybody.”
Colorado fell to 2–2 with the loss, its second straight. The quarterback question is among the decisions Sanders plans to consider after the team leaves Baylor. The schedule only gets tougher from here for the Buffs. They will host the 11th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders next Saturday night. Then, after a bye week, Colorado will goat Utah then travel to Oklahoma State before finishing the October slate on Halloween against Kansas State.
