Colorado football's Week 4 hero explains Shedeur Sanders' role in his recruitment last offseason
LaJohntay Wester, the Week 4 hero for Colorado football in a 38-31 OT win over Baylor, reiterated that Shedeur Sanders personally recruited the former FAU receiver to Boulder to become a top weapon for the "Grown QB."
“And after the season, it was just like what we gonna do? I text him, I’m like what we’re gonna do, and we got on the phone and I had to transfer,” Wester said (h/t Reach The People Media). "“Um, Shedeur man. He played a big role in it, like me coming here. Like he really played a huge role in that."
Wester has credited the family environment and the competition in Colorado's WR room as reasons for his decision to commit to the Buffs.
“Coach Prime, and just this environment, this family,” LaJohntay said of why CU was the best fit for him and his brother, Jaylen (h/t BuffZone). “It’s a big jump for us because we come from Florida. It’s far from Florida; a big adjustment but we’ve been taking risks all our life so me and my brother, it was a no brainer for us to come here and get the exposure get coached by NFL talent. It was great.
“Man, it’s been great. I mean, it’s a lot of competition in that room. Everybody’s still trying to adjust to each other, but we feed off each other’s energy so we compete but we also boost each other up when we’re doing good.”
LaJohntay Wester delivering what was expected of him with Colorado football
Xavier Weaver was CU's top receiver in receptions and yardage in 2023. No. 2 and No. 3, Travis Hunter and Jimmy Horn Jr., have shifted up a spot -- and Wester has become Shedeur's No. 3 target in 2024.
You can say Wester has delivered exactly what was expected of him, and then some. With Hunter becoming the country's top playmaker and Horn developing into an NFL prospect himself, Wester being the third wheel is a perfect role for him.
Especially when he can make a WR1-type play like he did against Baylor to save the Buffs and give CU a chance to win in overtime, which they did.
